Description
"Where The River Runs Black" (1986) (Christopher Cain) An overlooked profound little masterpiece, masterfully executed in beautiful simplicity. A beautiful, haunting, moody and lyrical childhood/innocence-lost mystical and existential jungle movie, with lush photography by Juan Ruiz Anchia, a beautiful score by James Horner, an amazingly honest and real performance by the lead child actor Alessandro Rabelo (who has only this one film credit) and some great dreamy voiceover and editing choices by director Christopher Cain (father of actor Dean Cain). An innocent boy born from an almost mystical union between an American Christian missionary and a mysterious Indian woman, in the tropic jungles of the Amazon, is raised by river dolphins after his father is killed by a giant water snake before he is even born (a Garden Of Eden-like manifestation of the devil himself? punishment for giving into temptation?) and his mother is murdered by gold prospectors from the city. Years later he is discovered by a high-ranking priest, a former friend of his father, and is brought back to the city and placed in a Catholic orphanage. Once there his innocent, feral upbringing begins to clash with the rules of the civilized world, and after spotting once again the men who murdered his mother, he pursues them back into the jungle on a metaphoric mission of innocence lost. "...A beautifully simple film....[The] story is lusciously photographed and scored and is as wondrous a trip down river as film audiences ever get..." Variety - Brit. (09/10/1986) "...It's a gorgeous-looking movie; the tropical greens and yellows, the chalks and red of the city almost vibrate in your mind..." Los Angeles Times - Michael Wilmington (09/19/1986)
